Communication - Seek First to Understand

Misunderstandings are one of the most misunderstood problems in marriage.

Always be respectful with your requests!

• Communication cannot happen unless we understand what is being said and what is meant by something that was expressed.  

  • If you are uncertain of what your family member has said or what they meant by what they said, you need to get clarification.

HOW TO GET CLARIFICATION:

• Start out by setting the stage for a discussion.  

  • Calmness is the basis for any discussion to happen.  

  • If emotions are running high, it is important to stop the conversation for about 10 - 30 minutes and then come back together to finish the discussion.

• The second step is for everyone to clearly understand that each person has the right to say, "I do not understand, please help me understand."  This statement should be said - without hostility in a person's voice -  and with an earnest desire to really understand the other person's statement or perspective.  

  • It is unfair to make this request with a hidden agenda.  It is for clarification purposes only.

• I Repeat - ALWAYS be respectful with your requests!
